Surgeons are slowly changing the method of operating on mesothelioma patients.
There are two key procedures used by surgeons to remove pleural mesothelioma tumors in the hope of prolonging the life of those with the disease. One removes the lung lining and is called a pleurectomy/decortication (P/D), and the other removes the entire lung, known as a extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP).
Surgeons are now debating as to which is more effective, with those in favor of P/D saying that the patients recover faster and there are less complications and those in favor of EPP saying that with that surgery there is less chance that the mesothelioma will return.
Long term studies show that P/D results in fewer patient deaths in the short term, up to 2.5 times less and therefore could be the better option. However each of the surgeries has their pros and cons and it is up to each patient to discuss which might be best for them with their surgeon.
