Pleural Mesothelioma, “Asbestos Lung Cancer” Myths

Mesothelioma is a confusing disease, and there are many misconceptions about it. Some of the pleural mesothelioma myths are based in old information that we now know was incorrect. Those who are diagnosed with mesothelioma, and their loved ones, have a lot to digest and learn in a very short amount of time. It can be overwhelming, and these common myths only make it more difficult to learn and understand.

Myth: Mesothelioma is Lung Cancer

Mesothelioma is not a type of lung cancer. Pleural mesothelioma develops in the pleura, which is the lining of the lungs, so it does affect breathing. Many people refer to it as “asbestos lung cancer” because it is easier to say and remember, and does not require a lengthy explanation, but that is very misleading.

In the past, mesothelioma was often misdiagnosed and lung cancer, but today we have tests which are more accurate and specific and can differentiate between the types of cancer cells. Mesothelioma can metastasize to the lungs, but it is still a different type of cancer. Asbestos can also cause both mesothelioma and lung cancer.

Myth: Smoking Can Cause Mesothelioma

Smoking does not and cannot cause mesothelioma. Asbestos exposure causes mesothelioma. It is that simple. This is important for mesothelioma victims who are or were smokers to understand because they often face criticism and blame for loved ones, and may even be told (wrongly) that they cannot recover compensation because they contributed to or caused their own illness by smoking. Again, smoking does not cause mesothelioma.

A combination of smoking and asbestos exposure may increase your risk of developing lung cancer.
