New Mesothelioma Drug Trial to Begin

The FDA has recently approved a new drug called nintedanib for a form of lung scarring and researchers have now begun to test the drug as a possible therapy in the treatment of mesothelioma.

The drug blocks several pathways that may be involved in the scarring of lung tissue and is to be used for those with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) which is both a serious and chronic condition with symptoms identical to the asbestos related condition asbestosis. In the same way as those with mesothelioma, there are few viable treatment options.

However, in clinical trials of 1,231 patients with IPF, nintedanib improved the amount of air patients could exhale after a deep breath. It is now being tested as an anti-cancer drug for mesothelioma and other cancers.

The mesothelioma trial is open to patients with the disease who have not had chemotherapy or radiotherapy and who are expected to live for at least three months San Francisco is one of the locations included in the trial.

Thanksgiving Dinner for Mesothelioma Sufferers

Thanksgiving was upon us and of course the major part is the dinner. But if one of your family or guests are suffering from mesothelioma and undergoing treatment, you could change how you prepare the dinner.

Radiation and chemotherapy, used to fight mesothelioma as well as other cancers, can change the patient’s sense of taste as well as their appetite, making some foods, which they used to love, unappetizing.

The ideal for those people undergoing mesothelioma treatment is to give them what are called super foods which help to fight cancer and introduce them into your Thanksgiving menu. These include mushrooms, pumpkins, cranberries and pomegranate.

Mushrooms and pomegranates help to block the hormones that make some cancers grow and spread. And in addition, according to the American Cancer Society, shiitake mushrooms especially, fight the progression of cancer by boosting the body’s immune system. So try and introduce some shitake mushrooms and make delicious mushroom gravy.

Pomegranates are rich in antioxidants so can also help those fighting cancer and one serving of cranberries provides at least 10 percent of the recommended daily amount of vitamin C and fiber, both of which are linked to reducing the risk of cancer. Add some pomegranates to your cranberry sauce.

And of course don’t forget the all important pumpkin pie.

Woman Washing Husband’s Clothes awarded over $25 million

Rose Griggs was awarded over $27 million by an Oakland jury in damages due to mesothelioma .

Rose Griggs, aged 82, used to shake out and wash her husband’s work clothes. He worked as an insulator handing insulation materials from 1950 to 1958.

During the trial it was revealed that the company who made the materials, Owens Illinois, knew from as early as the 1930s, that asbestos exposure could cause death and that test results on the material they used, called Kaylo, showed that exposure to the asbestos in the product could cause fatal diseases.

However Owens Illinois advertised Kaylo as ‘non-toxic’ and did not state that the product contained asbestos nor were there any warning on the boxes.

The jury found that Owens Illinois had not only manufactured a defective product but had failed to adequately warn and disclose information about Kaylo related health hazards. They awarded Rose and her husband a total of $27,342,500 for pain and suffering, punitive and economic damages.

Immunotherapy could be the Key to Mesothelioma Treatment

Researchers in Spain have identified a specific protein which is only found in those people suffering from mesothelioma who have the shortest survival times. Those with the highest levels of the protein had a median survival of 4.79 months and those with none of the protein 16.3 months. This discovery should help with treatment of those patients who have the protein.

Earlier this year, the FDA granted a fast track approval for the drug Keytruda, medical name pembrolizumab, which is designed to treat skin cancers but it also targets proteins in other type of cancers. Keyturda works in cancer patients to eliminating the protein which stops the body’s immune system from fighting the cancer.

According to the author of the study, Dr. Susana Cedrés, of the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology in Barcelona, Spain this could provide hope for mesothelioma patients in the future.

Most researchers agree that using the body’s own immune system by immunotherapy is where the future of cancer treatment lies as it has far fewer side effects than chemotherapy which can be toxic.

Should Mesothelioma Patients Have the Flu Shot?

As winter approaches, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recommending the flu shot for everyone over the age of six months, especially for those who are more at risk to the potential complications arising from influenza such as pneumonia. Those mostly at risk are people over 65 or under five, pregnant women, those with chronic heart or lung conditions and those with weakened immune systems such as HIV or diabetes.

However, if you have mesothelioma, should you have the shot? Mesothelioma experts tend to agree that those with the disease should have the vaccination. The reason is that up to 20% of Americans get the flu every year with between 3,000 and 49,000 people dying of complications arising from the virus.  More than 200,000 people in the U.S. have to go to hospital each year due to the flu.

If you have mesothelioma, the last thing you need is any virus which might affect your lungs so unless you have overriding reasons not to have it, it is best to go ahead and have the injection which is 71% effective in preventing the flu.

Potential Breakthrough In Chemotherapy for Mesothelioma

Scientists in Japan have just published details of a case they say could be a key to the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Pleural mesothelioma is usually caused by exposure to asbestos affecting the membrane around the lungs. Although there is no cure for mesothelioma, a chemotherapy combination of two drugs, cisplatin and pemetrexed, also known as Alimta, are the usual treatment. Unfortunately, many patients cannot have high doses of cisplatin because of the danger of liver damage.

However, respiratory medicine specialists at Uji Tokushukai Medical Center in Japan say that there may be a solution to the problem by stopping the cisplatin but continue with pemetrexed. Dr. Takayuki Takeda and his team have cited the case of a 69 year old mesothelioma patient who saw a partial tumor response but developed signs of liver toxicity after receiving five cycles of cisplatin and pemetrexed.

According to their report in Internal Medicine, they then stopped the cisplatin but continued with 18 more cycles of permetrexed which produced what they called a “complete response’ and stopped the tumor’s growth.

The researchers concluded that this appears very promising and further investigation is urgently needed.

Human Trial has Positive Results

Researchers with the National Cancer Institute have announced that the first phase II human trial of the experimental cancer drug amatuximab for pleural mesothelioma has produced some encouraging results.

When administered along with the traditional chemotherapy, amatuximab appears to be able to enhance the effectiveness of treatment and extend survival. The drug was granted orphan drug status in the U.S. in 2012 for its potential to improve mesothelioma treatment.

The study was led by Raffit Hassan, MD, of the National Cancer Institute and involved 89 pleural mesothelioma patients from 26 centers.

The good news is that, not only was the treatment well tolerated, but it was shown that it either shrank mesothelioma tumors or stopped their growth in 90% of patients.

Although the treatment did not significantly extend survival in these patients, overall survival was better than standard treatments. The average overall survival among mesothelioma patients on the combination treatment with amatuximab was 14.8 months, with a third of patients still alive and five still on amatuximab for maintenance when the tests were concluded. With standard therapy, mesothelioma survival is often less than 12 months.

Interesting Findings on New Mesothelioma Drug Cocktail

Scientists at the University of Western Australia have announced that they have discovered a combination of three mesothelioma drugs that target immune system proteins has the power to knock out mesothelioma in mice.

According to Shruti Krishnan, lead author of the study at the UWA School of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, the three drugs with triple immunotherapy protocol produced complete clearance of established mesothelioma tumors in the mice.  It appears to make little difference whether the drugs were administered one at a time or all at the same time.

The new research is published in the Journal of Interferon and Cytokine Research and whilst it is thought it could work for many different types of cancer, the fact that it worked in mesothelioma is an exciting discovery as mesothelioma traditionally appears to have a limited range of treatment options.

Good News for Peritoneal Mesothelioma Patients

A recent article published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology has outlined the changes in the treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma which have taken place over the last ten years. Peritoneal mesothelioma occurs on the peritoneum, which is the lining around the abdominal organs and accounts for less than a third of mesothelioma cases.

These latest studies show that the outlook for people with this type of asbestos linked cancer is improving all the time.

The latest study discusses how surgeons with Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Medicine and the Massey Cancer Center in Richmond have used a combination of surgery and chemotherapy which has significantly improved survival rates for peritoneal mesothelioma patients. Previous treatments resulted in an average survival rate of around a year, but these new treatments have more than doubled that and in some case patients are living up to 9 years.

Lead investigator, Doctor Ali Raza, highlights that there are also other treatment approaches which are looking promising such as the identification of molecular targets that will allow them to peritoneal mesothelioma from the inside out.

New Study on Mesothelioma Survival Rates

One of the country’s top mesothelioma surgeons, Dr. David Sugarbaker, Director of the Lung Institute at Baylor College of Medicine in Texas, has just published a study he says confirms the role of lymph node involvement in survival after radical mesothelioma surgery.

Dr. Sugarbaker is one of the most experienced practioners of a radical surgical approach to malignant pleural mesothelioma called extrapleural pneumonectomy which aims to prevent the spread or return of mesothelioma, by not only removing the tumor and the pleural lining where it is, but also the nearest lung, all or part of the diaphragm, the lining around the heart, and other at-risk tissues.

Although some consider the procedure dangerous, in a new study, Dr. Sugarbaker proves that survival after EPP has a lot to do with how far into the lymph system mesothelioma has spread.

In the study, 5% of the mesothelioma patients who had EPP died either in the hospital or within 30 days of surgery. But 4% of patients who had the procedure lived for 10 years or more. Sixty-seven percent lived for at least a year after surgery and 14% were still alive at 5 years. The difference appeared to be influenced, in part, by whether or not the cancer had spread to patients’ lymph nodes.

The study confirms that lymph node status is significantly correlated with overall survival in patients.
